Burgundy students participated in an amazing all school meeting presentation this week in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

8th graders spent the past few months studying the Civil Rights Movement and formed groups to learn more about the myriad contributors and events to the movement including musicians, writers, influential speakers and organizers, marches, protests, and important legislation. Their research culminated in a 40-minute multimedia presentation with images, videos, quotes, music, and key facts.

The audience was asked to play an active role as they held up protest signs the 8th graders made and participated in a call-and-response throughout the program. 8th graders concluded by making it clear that the work for equality for all people continues today and encouraged students to be active in voicing their beliefs and affecting change. We sang Stevie Wonder’s Happy Birthday song and students were each given an MLK pencil in honor of Dr. King’s birthday.

The project was led by humanities teachers Cara Will, Levita Mondie and Paige Pluymers and Emily Jonas helped with staging. 8th grade students were responsible for all content, production, and tech related to the program. A special shout-out goes to student producers Elaina, Angelina, and Nia, who worked tirelessly on this project! We are proud of all of them for their hard work and grateful for this annual event that brings our community together to learn about Dr. King and the movement, past and present.
