Special thanks to our maintenance team, Geraldine, and special volunteers for the instrumental role they play in our athletic program—everything from set-up, transportation and taking an active role with our students. Thank you, Team Burgundy! Thanks to all of our fall coaches for teaching meaningful life lessons through sport!

Coed JV Soccer:
The Burgundy Blazers’ JV soccer squad kicked up a whole heaping lot of fun this fall, running, jumping, and cruising through a packed two-month season of drills, practices, and games. This was one of the driest falls on record in Alexandria, which made our field brown and play very fast. Yet the Blazers were faster as we raced to a 3-0 start to our season! We beat arch rivals Browne, ACDS, and Capitol Hill, schools that always play us tough. Behind the scenes, the team was working on dribbling, passing and shooting and they quickly developed into the best passing squad that this level of soccer has seen in many years. We were extremely pleased to see them learn to use the whole team and field to move the ball around and keep it away from the opposition. It was increasingly satisfying to watch them develop as a team and begin to trust their fellows as they moved the ball to open spaces around the field.

We finished the season 3-1-1 and overcame several injuries to very important teammates along the way. We had a really good team this year and the student athletes made a lot of progress both physically and in maturity and attitude toward team sports. The energy and perseverance put forth by the players was unparalleled. At both practice and games, players were seen encouraging and supporting each other and keeping spirits high. Our true team secret was our confidence in each other and positive mindset. They deserve to be very proud of their achievements.

Coed Cross-Country:
Congratulations to all runners for finishing a great season. After early successes in the LCDS and Congressional School meets we finished on a high note at home! Blazing back in the past our XC squad finished third (5/6 girls) at the Congressional meet, which featured over 18 schools! At LCDS they Blazed through farmland to run a full 5k and build up their endurance.

The finale of the season is the annual ABC XC meet on their home turf! Seven school teams with a total of nearly 150 runners participated in the championship meet this year. Despite a young team, the Burgundy girls placed first and the Burgundy boys tied for first place with ACDS! The girls team was led by Mariel Carr (finished 1st) with five runners all placing in the top 15. The boys team was led by Graham Haberl (finished 2nd) with six runners all placing in the top 15.

We are very proud of all the runners who participated in the last meet. The Burgundy Cross Country team was comprised of 30 runners, with 27 participating in the championship meet. The effort by all runners was impressive throughout the season. Thanks to all parents and other loyal fans!

Coed Volleyball:
The Volleyball Blazin’ Blazers had an eventful and successful season. Led by Coach EJ (Emily Jonas ’03) and Coach Barb Turner, the middle school Volleyball team grew tremendously over the course of this season. This team was amongst the most dedicated the coaches have seen in some time, with over 20 players, every practice showcased true sportsmanship, passion, and eagerness to learn the fun sport of volleyball. The team began by learning the basic rules of the game and focused on developing individual skills that eventually merged together to create a great blazin’ team. With a short season of two games, the Volleyball Blazers came away with well-developed skills and made Burgundy proud. In the final game at Norwood School, the team was ecstatic to beat the host school in a final match win. Each Blazer served, digged, and spiked! It was an exciting finale to our season. Each volleyball player developed their mental sharpness for the game, quick feet, and communication skills for this fine sport. Coach EJ and Coach Barb are most proud of the Volleyball players for taking the risk, stepping into an unknown game, and being awesome! We wish the 8th graders luck in their future athletics and we will be ready for a strong season for the Blazers, next year! Thank you to all of the players and families for a fun, dedicated, and overall great season!

Coed Varsity Soccer:
The 2019 Varsity Soccer team had a tremendous season. The Blazers went back-to-back and brought home the ABC league championship banner for the second straight year! The season started with a hard fought one-goal defeat to Capital Hill Day School. The players responded by going to work every Monday and Thursday and working relentlessly on their touches and tactics and stepping up into new roles and into new positions and they did not lose again. They went on to score more than 30 goals in 8 games, and capped it off with a barn-burner of a win over rival ACDS in a rematch of the 2018 final, demonstrating class and passion the whole way.

Message from Coach Bethany:
Taylor was an awesome addition to our program and terrific coaching teammate! Special thank you to our loyal fans and soccer families for providing transportation, support, and cheering on our squad. And to the players, thank you for your dedication. We would like to salute our eight graders—Amelia, Oliver, Chazz, Marie, Phil, Graham, Logan, Nora, Nick, Jonas—who were the heart of our team.
