Our spring teams have become more competitive; the teamwork throughout the school day and during games is beautiful to see, and the leadership from our 8th graders has been phenomenal.
Burgundy Lower School teachers team in planning a differentiated, integrated curriculum. In First Grade, Assistant Teachers are responsible for supporting the students and teachers through lunchtime each day, including work with small groups of students, materials preparation, and general classroom duties. Preferred applicants will have experience working with young children and a knowledge of or interest in progressive education. Teachers report directly to the Lower School Head.
The qualified candidate will have:
- Understanding of the developmental needs of six and seven year-olds
- Genuine love of learning and desire to work with children as a facilitator of learning
- Ability to organize and manage a positive classroom grounded in a belief that all learning begins with attending to children’s developmental social and emotional needs
- A degree with a major in Elementary Education or a related field (preferred)
- Collaborative spirit and interest in team-teaching
- Desire and ability to create a joyful learning environment that centers on hands-on/experiential processes
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Willingness to teach and adapt an integrated, inquiry-based curriculum
- Commitment to teaching diverse learning styles and differentiated instruction
- Interest in outdoor, hands-on and environmental education
- A sense of humor and love for young children
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teaching small groups, supervising students at recess, working with children one-on-one
- Maintaining an emphasis on preparing students for the joys and challenges of learning
- Supporting lead teacher in preparation of weekly newsletter, documentation of learning, and curriculum materials
- Performing necessary administrative tasks and attending a limited number of required meetings and events as determined with the lead teacher and/or Head of Lower School
- Engaging in reflective practice and various professional growth activities
Hours:
- Arrive by 8:00 a.m., depart after 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. Faculty meetings are held on Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and assistants are encouraged to attend. Meeting attendance is negotiated with the Lower School Head.
- The School is closed for most national holidays, as well as Winter and Spring Break.
