Burgundy’s Middle School students and families participate in community service year-round, but this time of year offers some special opportunities.

Wrapping gifts for Wesley Housing

On Friday evening, December 8, a group of Middle School students, along with parents and alumna Nina Wilson ’17 wrapped presents for Wesley Housing. Wesley Housing distributes donated gifts to the families living in its transitional and affordable housing units. Families submit wish lists of needs and desired gifts and these gifts are bought by Wesley's donors. We made sure that every gift was beautifully wrapped and ready for holiday delivery.

On Saturday afternoon, December 9, a hardy group of Middle Schoolers braved the snow to solicit gifts of food and cash at the Giant on Duke Street in Alexandria. We collected enough food and money to give Koinonia 20 holiday baskets, each holding enough food for a festive holiday dinner for a family of four. Each basket included a $25 gift card so that the family can purchase perishable items such as a turkey or ham and fresh vegetables.

On Thursday afternoon, under the direction of “wrap master” Cathy Guertin, another group of students wrapped the 20 baskets so that they can be beautiful as well as practical gifts. In addition to the fixings for a meal for four as well as a $25 gift card for Giant supermarkets, students also attached a card with a note to each family who will receive the baskets.
