Burgundy Covid-19 Resources: Health and Safety Measures

Educating our students is our mission and our goal. While there is no way to eliminate all risk, our goal is to slow the spread of disease through policies and protocols guided by the CDC and the Virginia department of health. The health and safety of our community is our highest priority and is a collective responsibility. Students who are unable to comply with all of the Health and Safety Measures in this document — including but not limited to the wearing of facial coverings — are required to participate in remote learning only and may not return to campus until able to comply.

We have layered in the following mitigation strategies. Detailed updates to process, policies and protocols will be shared with employees and parents in advance of the reopening of school.

Stay home if sick:

  • In order to protect the health and well-being of our entire community, if your child or anyone in your family is sick, we expect them to stay at home.
  • This year, more than ever, any student with any illness, COVID-19 symptoms or not, should remain home.

Attendance:

  • Attending school is important whether in person or remote.  Because we are asking students to remain home if sick, we will track attendance as usual and ask that the usual notification process be followed and will be flexible regarding the number of missed school days.

Stay home if exposed:

  • Burgundy will follow the CDC and local health department guidelines for managing students, faculty or staff who have been exposed to COVID-19.
  • Students, faculty and staff must stay home if they or a close family member have any signs of a contagious disease such as COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Generally, a period of isolation and quarantine will be required.  Fever free without medication for 72 hours, symptom free and clearance from physician to return.

Health screenings:

  • Regular symptom self-monitoring will be required for all students (by parent), faculty and staff.  All will be asked to self-monitor for COVID-19 related symptoms each day before coming to school.  A screening checklist will be provided to community members and will be required to be completed each day.
  • Students, faculty and staff will be required to stay home if sick.

On campus health screening:

  • Temperature screening will be administered during morning carpool.  If a student is found to have a temperature, they will be sent home.
  • Students who appear ill will be sent home.
  • Students who become sick during the day will be separated from others and parents/guardians will be contacted to arrange pickup within 30 minutes of the phone call.

Face coverings:

  • All students, faculty and staff must wear face masks at all times when indoors.
  • All students, faculty and staff must wear face masks outdoors only when six-feet physically distancing cannot be achieved or maintained.

Physical distancing:

  • All students, faculty and staff will maintain six-feet physical distancing. Markers will be posted to help maintain safe distancing.
  • Direction on campus will be marked and “monitoring team” will direct and guide to help maintain physical distancing.
  • Marked pathways will be designated for guidance.

Hand hygiene:

  • Students, faculty and staff, will be expected to wash their hands frequently throughout the day.  Hand sanitizer will be available if sinks are not readily available.
  • As long as weather permits, outdoor hand washing stations will be available for use in order that the community can wash hands before entering a building.

Cleaning and disinfecting:

  • Cleaning practices will be in line with the CDC recommendations.
  • Our cleaning crew will clean each classroom as they have done so in the past.  Extra attention will be given to high touch surfaces and more frequent cleaning of restrooms throughout the day.  Additional support will be provided by our cleaning service throughout the school day.

Eating at school:

  • Children should be sent to school with food they can open by themselves.
  • Microwaves will not be available.
  • No food sharing will be allowed.
  • Wrappers/packaging will go home in lunch boxes.
  • Students will wash their hands before and after their meal.
  • Students will eat outside when possible.
  • Students will maintain maximum distance possible if eating inside.

Sharing of materials:

  • Students will have individual sets of materials to use; some of these will be provided by parents per our yearly class supply lists and others provided by the school
  • Students will keep materials in labeled containers.
  • When shared materials are used, they will be used by small groups (2-4 students) and disinfected between uses. Items that can not be disinfected, will not be shared.
  • Clean and disinfect materials at the end of each day.
  • Avoid sharing electronic devices, toys, books, and other games or learning aids.

Testing:

  • We continue to explore the efficacy and logistics of performing COVID-19 tests before returning to school.
  • We may require testing of employees and students seven days prior to the return to campus.

Self-care and well-being:

  • We will pay close attention to the student’s mental health and well-being in order to help them manage any stress or anxiety they may be experiencing.

Student or employee tests positive for COVID-19:

  • When a student or employee is sick on campus, they will be immediately moved to the isolation area.
  • If your child or a family member is diagnosed with COVID-19 you must report the diagnosis to the Burgundy Health Coordinator and provide the date of onset of symptoms.
  • Follow your local health department and CDC guidelines.
  • Siblings must stay home and quarantine and follow any additional health department guidelines.
  • Follow CDC and local health department guidelines for ending isolation and quarantine.
  • Students may return to school after at least 10 days have passed since onset of symptoms or positive test and have been cleared to end isolation by the local health department. They must also be fever-free and symptom-free for 72 hours. Parents must provide documentation from their healthcare provider confirming that their child is no longer contagious.
  • The school will send a letter to the affected community members following privacy and confidentiality measures.
  • All process and protocols are subject to change. They will be updated and provided to employees and parents before the opening of school.

Parents or visitors to campus:

  • In an effort to limit exposure, there will be no visitors on campus, including parents.
  • In the case of a late drop off or early pickup of a student please coordinate with the Health Coordinator and the teacher via email and telephone.

Modifications to Campus and Changes to Process

Burgundy’s campus naturally provides opportunities for safety and distancing. Most classrooms are large and open to the outdoors and once outside, there are many areas where students can play and learn.

Outdoor playspaces and playground cleaning:

  • Students will have access to designated play spaces on campus; time at play spaces will be scheduled in order to limit cohort mixing
  • High use play areas will be scheduled to limit cohort mixing.

Outdoor classrooms:

  • Temporary outdoor classrooms and seating have been created throughout campus. Shade sails have been added in some locations throughout campus. Additional areas will be modified or created as the need arises.
  • Students have or are making portable desks which can be used outside. These are assigned to individual students and not shared.

Travel/Flow in Buildings:

  • Designated pathways will be created to allow one-way direction when possible.
  • New traffic flow protocols will be established inside buildings.
  • Reminders of the six foot distance and other protocols will be posted throughout campus.
  • Students and parents shall not enter buildings that are not assigned to their cohort.

Signage:

  • Signage will be posted on campus identifying pathways where needed.
  • Signage will be posted throughout campus and near sinks to identify proper safety protocols.
    • Wear a mask
    • Six foot physical distancing
    • Stay home if sick
    • Wash your hands frequently

Travel/Flow Outside:

  • Traffic flow patterns will be modified on outside pathways to create one way directions where possible.
  • Where possible, directional markings will be put in place, especially in narrow crossings.

Air Quality:

  • All HVAC equipment will be serviced prior to reopening to upgrade and replace/clean filters.
  • When weather conditions allow, we have the opportunity to turn off systems and open windows and doors to classrooms in some buildings.
  • We continue to evaluate system adjustments with our vendors and experts in this area.

Handwashing Stations:

  • As long as weather permits, outdoor hand washing stations will be available for use outside each building to allow for cleaning before entering a building.
  • Handwashing protocols will be created and distributed and training will be provided.
  • Final Handwashing Station Diagram.pdf

Medical Clinic:

  • The clinic space in the main office has been modified and a transient/isolation room has been added in the area near the copy machine in the Main Office. Access to this portion of the main office will be limited to students and the Health Coordinator and supporting staff.
  • Students may not be sent to the clinic without the teacher first calling the Health Coordinator.
  • For non-emergency concerns, the teachers will contact the Health Coordinator on the radio first and together they will triage the student.

Reception:

  • During full on campus days, visitors will be permitted on campus without an appointment. Limited numbers of parents are allowed to wait for their child on campus during remote plus activities and half days. Temperature screening, mask wearing, and physical distancing must be in place.
  • If there is an urgent need to be on campus during full days, prior to arriving on campus, please notify the Health Coordinator, teacher or the person you are meeting with via email or phone to make arrangements.

Bathrooms:

  • Cleaned daily as part of our usual process.
  • Cleaned intermittently throughout the day. Two members of our cleaning crew will be on site.
  • Signs on large (normally non single use) bathrooms in Loft and MS buildings will indicate whether the bathroom is occupied in order to limit occupancy levels. Teachers will send only one student at a time.

Carpool:

  • Carpool process, both morning drop off and afternoon pickup locations, will be modified in order to allow for physical distancing by grade cohorts. Details of the new process will be sent before school begins.
  • Signs will be posted to show direction and personnel will be available to guide drivers and students.
  • In an effort to reduce the number of touches, students who are able will be responsible for opening the door and exiting the vehicle with their belongings and with their face covering on.
  • Driver should remain in the vehicle unless helping a young student exit the vehicle. Masks must be worn when outside the vehicle.
  • The student’s temperature will be taken before the car pulls away.
