Chicks at the farm

Our JK Chicks recently enjoyed a curriculum-centered and seasonal field trip to Forest Hall Farm in Mechanicsville, Maryland. The farm, owned by the Wood family, features fresh produce and flowers, farm animals and a corn maze. The trip was part of the JK study of farms and growing things to eat. They read books together about farms in general and pumpkins in particular.

At Forest Hall Farm, the JK Chicks were able to enjoy a beautiful hayride, explore an extensive corn maze, and choose a personal pumpkin. They most enjoyed playing on the farm playground which included tractors, a train, and a corn house. Afterwards, they made pumpkin bread together -- learning about measuring tools like cups and teaspoons. Each child in class had a part in adding ingredients to the pumpkin bread. The Chicks also examined canned pumpkin, to better understand how things you see grown on a farm end up on a grocery store shelf.

The JK Chicks took advantage of the kitchen at Norton House, home of the advancement office, to bake their bread. Traveling to the other end of campus was like a mini field trip for them, and once they arrived they ate the baked bread and played on the lawn.

Michele McCabe hands out pumpkin bread pieces to the JK Chicks.
