On Friday, April 24th, the Burgundy Middle School community honored GLSEN’s Day of Silence.

The GLSEN Day of Silence is a global demonstration in which LGBTQ+ students and allies take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment, discrimination, and inequity LGBTQ+ people face regularly in our schools. Middle school students, teachers, and administrators joined via Zoom to affirm and support the LGBTQ+ community in their continued fight for representation, equality, and inclusion in our community.

Many honored a vow of silence to show support for those who have had their identity silenced, shunned, or erased for simply living in their truth. Once the silence was broken (using an electronic rainbow countdown timer!) attendees shared messages of hope, inspiration, and affirmation towards one another. Students shared positive words of wisdom and exciting LGBTQ-related news, including the recent passing of the Virginia Equality Act, which prohibits discrimination or termination of employment based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

While many echoed that there is much more work to be done, a core sentiment of hope and continued progress resonated amongst the room.

A few of our favorite slogans shared by staff and students:
LGBT= Life gets better together.
Sticks and stones may break my bones but words hurt more.
Love is love.
Ask before you assume. Pronouns are important.
