Black History Month 2020 Celebration
At Burgundy, we work to integrate into our full curriculum the contribution of diverse people. Often this leads to a focus on the study of people from our past history, many of whom were fathers, mothers, workers in their own communities before they were singled out by history for their contributions to society. This year in celebration of Black History Month and in recognition of the black excellence demonstrated within the Burgundy community and beyond, PAAS (Parents of African-American Students) worked with Pat, Elizabeth, and Jared to put together presentations from African American professionals in our own community. Nine black professionals—men and women—from all backgrounds and areas of expertise spoke to the student body on Wednesday, February 5.
The guests spoke about their career trajectories and successes, the challenges they faced, the mentors who guided them, and answered questions from the students. In the case of the two who presented to our younger students, they also brought materials from their work for students to handle and explore. It was a meaningful event for everyone—on stage and in the audience!
Our older students were encouraged to continue to discuss in their classes some of the information and themes gleaned from the presentation. For example, they were challenged to consider that many of the presenters graduated from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), why HBCUs were needed when they were first established and why they continue to be needed today. Look for updates about these ongoing discussions in upcoming editions of Constant Comment.
