Bikes for the World 2022

Nov 3, 2022

On Saturday morning, November 19, from 10 am to 1 pm, Middle School Students will be preparing bikes for shipment for Bikes for the World (https://www.bikesfortheworld.org/). Our annual Bikes for the World event is a joint project of our Community Service and Sustainability programs and we schedule it each year on or close to America Recycles Day (this year on Tuesday, November 15).

Bikes for the World works to improve access to affordable transportation and promote sustainable development abroad by donating containers of used bicycles and bicycle parts to select organizations particularly in Africa, Central America and South Asia.  Despite what we have all heard about problems with shipping, Bikes for the World continues to be consistently successful in shipping donated bikes to their destinations!

These bikes are used by partner organizations for a range of projects that help to meet specific needs in their communities. Such projects use bikes to train disadvantaged youth or persons with disabilities in bike mechanics, increase access to education for children, connect farmers to markets, support small-scale entrepreneurship, and more.

To prepare donated bicycles for shipment Middle School family volunteers will take off the pedals and turn the handlebars so they take up as little space as possible in shipping containers. Participants do not need to know anything about tools or bicycles– they will be trained!  Both adults and Middle School students are needed. Pizza lunch will be provided.

Additionally, we are looking for donated bicycles (any size, any condition) and bicycle parts. They can be brought to school at any time Monday, November 14 – Friday, November 18 and left next to the Middle School entrance. They will be stored next to the shop until Saturday.  Receipts will be provided for tax purposes upon request.
