Art in a Chicken Yard

Burgundy Farm Summer Day Camp’s Summer BOP! introduces: “Art in a Chicken Yard with AnnieColor!”

The first round of this special and virtual summer camp was a success!

On the first day, Annie and her campers spent one hour in the chicken yard observing the chickens’ life. The chickens laid eggs in front of them, and they got a total of 9 eggs! They fed them wineberries, lettuce and cracked corn, took them for a walk outside the yard and watched Annie’s dog Daisy herded them back. After all this fun, they observed the coops and learned what is important in keeping chickens happy and safe—including how to collect rain water from the gutters and the need for doors that can lock securely. Finally, students were asked to design a practical and strong chicken coop for the next class.

On day two, Annie taught her campers how to draw a chicken and together they reviewed their coop designs and ideas. They also designed chicken bracelets to keep track of their names using a color-coordinated chart. Bonus: they learned all about the flowers and plants surrounding the coop at Annie’s house.

On the third day, together they designed and drew a chicken yard and coop. The group decided on features like a security system that alerts the owner if danger is near, a fence with chicken wire to let rain and sunlight through, and a glass roof to keep them warm in the winter. This lesson also included learning to sketch floor plans complete with measurements!

Such creativity and fun in virtual learning! It’s not too late to sign up your child for Annie’s next “Art in a Chicken Yard” camp via burgundysummer.org!
